RailsConf07 Day -1

Just Arrived in Portland. The Redline was working so only had to pay $2.00 to get from the airport to the hotel.

Hotel charges $9.95 for internet access! When are they going to learn that for many professionals this is like air and water. This will be the last time I stay at a Doubletree until they change their policy. I did get it dropped to $6.95/day for using my T-Mobile hotspot “roaming” partner account. Every time I think I’m going to drop the hotspot account it comes in handy again.

Did a 5 mile run around the waterfront park in Portland. Beautiful sunny day! Looking forward to my Friday run and my long run on Sunday.

Ate Diner in the Blossoming Lotus Vegan Restaurant. Good food. Lot’s of raw options. At first I thought this would be another “mother earth i’ll need to get some more food after eathing here” restaurant but I was quite full afterwards. It’s near Powell’s Bookstore which is always a treat while in Portland.

RailsConf07 Day 0

I’ve delayed much of my comments about the rails conf 07 for a few days in order to get a better fuller more well rounded picture of the conference. I’m glad I did because overall it’s much like the TV series of ROME on HBO.

  • Very well organized
  • A bit cheesy at first
  • Every day/episode steadily improves
  • I’m hooked

Ok, I’ll admit, very strange from a guy that doesn’t watch TV and until March 2006 didn’t even own a TV for the better part of a decade. I’ll confess I now have an HDTV terrestrial tuner connected to a cheap projector. There it’s out. Anyway, I rented Rome from Netflix so I don’t really count that as watching TV.

Day 0 – Tutorials

I attended the Is JavaScript Overrated? Or: How I Stopped Worrying and Put Prototype and script.aculo.us to Full Use. given by Thomas Fuchs, the author of the script.acul.us library. Mr. Fuchs gave an overview of his library which included both presentational slides and demos of the code in action. This is an overall good strategy with such a developer biased audience. He also gave links to his examples so that all could download and try them out.
